Same Space, Different Time


Sixty years separate these pictures...note the shades descending from Truman's new porch on the left.  The kid has no clue about the significance or history of the place, nor I suspect, do most of those on the right.  However, the 29-year old man on the far left understood the place very well.

Dad had been recalled to the Air Force during the Korean War and the picture was taken during a working trip to the Pentagon.  Six years earlier, he was in the air over occupied Europe flying with the Eighth Air Force bomber streams.  He saw over 40 airplanes go down nearby him, came home, went to college, worked  a couple of years for a power company, and here he was in Washington.  Better than anyone else in the pictures, he understood the history and significance of the place.
