Same Space, Different Time

Sixty years separate these pictures...note the shades descending from Truman's new porch on the left.  The kid has no clue about the significance or history of the place, nor I suspect, do most of those on the right.  However, the 29-year old man on the far left understood the place very well.

Dad had been recalled to the Air Force during the Korean War and the picture was taken during a working trip to the Pentagon.  Six years earlier, he was in the air over occupied Europe flying with the Eighth Air Force bomber streams.  He saw over 40 airplanes go down nearby him, came home, went to college, worked  a couple of years for a power company, and here he was in Washington.  Better than anyone else in the pictures, he understood the history and significance of the place.

Dilbert - Powerpoint Portal

New wave managers have been spending extraordinary amounts of time--staff time, actually--farting around with these Powerpoint slides. They are used in place of the old chalk boards, overhead projector slides, and flip charts which aren't as pretty, but did get the job done for decades. Staff, who once went home at 5:00, now go home at 10:00; CEOs who once refereed their subordinates' squabbles or played golf, now spend entire days pestering their staff to make minor changes in the Powerpoint slides, as internal warfare rages amongst the subordinates. After all that, Dilbert's strip pretty clearly tells the story.

Saw a new CEO come to town once with this bit of nonsense in his mostly empty arsenal and try to graft it to an existing organization of highly experienced old timers. The most common response he got was, "you've got to be sh**ing me." Played out about like the cartoon suggests.

A '61 recalls:  "If I remember correctly, there was a plaque or marker in front of the building that said it had been built by the WPA or one of the other New Deal agencies. When we arrived in the fall of '49, a new wing with four new classrooms was being finished. A lot of the neighborhood was built in the '30's, but much of it was post-war, too. Where I lived, a few blocks west, was on a entire street of new 2-bedroom frame houses like the one in the photo, bought by our parents on the GI Bill."

Class of 1963 - Tandy Elementary

The grade school classes in this posting show about 20% of the EHHS Class of 1963 as they matured through the grades at Tandy Elementary. These were some of the kids who had been in school together the longest when we graduated. There was a smaller group that came from Handley, fewer still from Sagamore Hill Elementary, and a similar number from Meadowbrook Elementary.

Tandy Elementary is located just west of Meadowbrook Junior High, south of Meadowbrook Drive and dates to the 1920s. The neighborhoods that it served were developed earlier than those east of the Junior High.
